Save Rice, Save Lives

Campaign encourages Filipinos to Eat their rice right —the right amount, and no leftovers.

Statistics show that in 2008, each Filipino wasted 2 tablespoons of cooked rice every day. This is equivalent to 12 percent of imported rice valued at P7.27 billion. The wasted rice could have also fed 2.5 million hungry Filipinos in a year.

Rice usually covers half of a typical Filipino plate as most rely only on rice for energy source. A diversified diet by adding other alternative carbs to rice will make one healthier.

The campaign already gathered students across the country and TV Personalities to commit themselves to conserve rice.

Save Rice, Save Lives campaign was re-launched in 2010. About 7,000 from Mariano Marcos State University, Batac, Ilocos Norte; Central Luzon State University, Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija; Bicol University, Legaspi City, Albay; University of the Philippines, Los Baños, Laguna; Leyte State University, Baybay City, Leyte; and University of Southern Mindanao, Kabakan, North Cotabato, recited the Save Rice, Save Livespledge.
